Dr. Frank Toda to receive Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award
For sixteen years, Dr. Frank Toda was committed to student success at Columbia Gorge Community College. In December, the Alpha Sigma Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society submitted a nomination for Dr. Toda for the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award for retiring college presidents. The chapter is excited to announce that Dr. Toda has been honored with this award.
The Bennett Awards honor retiring college presidents who have provided consistently outstanding support to Phi Theta Kappa chapters and advisors throughout their careers. The award is named in honor of the late Dr. Michael Bennett, longtime president of St. Petersburg College in Florida. Thirteen retiring presidents will be honored with this award in 2018. Award winners will be acknowledged at the annual Phi Theta Kappa convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Phi Theta Kappa is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
During his time at CGCC, Dr. Toda was consistent in his efforts to support the Alpha Sigma Xi Chapter. He was given an honorary membership to Phi Theta Kappa by the chapter. Dr. Toda spoke at almost every new member induction ceremony and always promoted the four hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa. In 2016, Dr. Toda received the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction for College Administrators.
The chapter would like to share some of the words that chapter members and the advisor wrote in the nomination application.
“Being present. While this is a simple statement, Dr. Toda is present and available. He is present on and around campus, often stopping by the chapter offices to check in. This makes chapter officers, members and the advisor feel supported and acknowledged.”
"He understood that I had big dreams and believed in me. This was not just with me but I often saw him talking to other students about the same things and I smiled."
“Dr. Toda has had an adventurous life, especially before working in higher education. His stories create a connection between him and anyone he engages with. His stories provide guidance through examples and experience. His stories motivate students to succeed, do their best, never give up and clear obstacles that might divert a student from achieving their goal.”
Alpha Sigma Xi Chapter thanks Dr. Toda for all he has done for the students of Columbia Gorge Community College. He has left a lasting impact on CGCC graduates and current students as well as many college employees.
